Nikon 85mm f1.4D V Nikon 85mm f1.8G. I’ve had the Nikon 85mm F1.4D for ages and it’s just sublime; results are stunning and its been totally reliable.
Recently though I’ve been trying to reduce the weight of my kit and I never shoot at f1.4 anyway, just too hit and miss with a fast-moving event like a wedding. Together with the noise of the lens hunting for focus and the switch you have to throw to manually focus meant I thought I’d have a look at the much lighter, cheaper, quicker focus and quieter focus of the Nikon 85mm F1.8G.
Have tested both lenses and really can’t see any real difference between the two at F1.8 so it’s the new lens that’s in my bag. The D will be popped on eBay which will go for £150 more second-hand than I paid for the G. Now what to buy with the cash??!?!
